BCYC rules seminar — Rules in Brief from US Sailing

by Web Admin on April 24, 2013

At Joe Parker’s understanding racing rules meeting at BCYC this evening, we learned that Main and Jib will receive US Sailing “Rules in Brief” at registration.  By coincidence, I had ordered a copy for each boat racing in fleet 216, at the request of Matt and Chris P.

Attached is a pre-read.

My experience, the Rules in Brief should be sufficient for so-called Wed night beer can racing, but we should all have a rule book in the unlikely event of contact that causes damage, or we get caught in the “Klaban zone”.

In the past, and at the meeting tonight, the areas that seem to raise the most questions are “limitations on the right-of-way boat”; when “room at the mark does and does not apply”; and whether the committee boat is a mark of the course or an obstruction.

Be safe, be kind.

John

ps, for the sailing rules junkies, the ISAF “study version” highlights the changes in the new 2013 rules, and cures insomnia when taken with wine.

pss.

and for those with really Smart phones, there’s an App for sailing rules and Dave Perry’s understanding racing rules, too.
